A few times a year we organize workshops on finance and economics for reporters. These usually last from one-four days and include presentations by economists, academics and others. To apply, please contact us at journalismtraining@hotmail.com

Freetown, Sierra Leone (February 20-22, 2008)

IPD was invited to participate in a workshop on “Budget and Financial Reporting” organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat. Speakers included former BBC reporter Orin Gordon and a number of regional journalists and officials.

There is now global agreement on the dangers of capital market liberalization and the need for trade agreements which are fair to all. New writings by Paul Collier, Jeffrey Sachs and Joseph E. Stiglitz have laid out alternatives for developing countries with resource wealth. COVERING GLOBALIZATION SEMINAR: Food, Trade, Agriculture and The Environment

Our flagship seminar on “Covering Globalization” will again be led by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz and held at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism but this year we are adding a host of new speakers and topics and looking more closely at trade, the environment and agriculture.
Manhattan Institute Senior Fellow Tamar Jacoby will speak on immigration, Wall St Journal Reporter Steve LeVine will chair a panel on oil, Ruth Greenspan Bell will moderate a session on climate change after Kyoto and Nayan Chandra will discuss what we can expect from China and India.

Johannesburg, South Africa (November 1-4)

COVERING Trade and globalization

Graduate Journalism Programme of Witswatersrand University, and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue brought Sub-Saharan journalists to a four-day seminar about the expansion of free trade in African countries and its economic impact in the region. Speakers included University of Michigan Professor Robert Howse, the former New York Times trade reporter Elizabeth Becker, and regional academics and journalists including Reuters correspondent Manoah Esipisu, and Trudi Hartzenberg, Executive Director of the Trade Law Center.

New York City, USA (October 9-13)

COVERING Development and Poverty Reduction

At this special seminar hosted by the IIJ of InWEnt in New York City, reporters from around the world learned about the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, and the obstacles to poverty reduction. Led by Graham Watts the week-long seminar included lectures from Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz and Jeffrey Sachs and United Nations representative Kamal Malhotra.

Prague, Czech Republic (August 24-26, 2006)

COVERING European Accession and Economic Affairs

TOL Magazine and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue offered a three-day workshop to Eastern European journalists. Participants learned about the economic implications of EU accession and how to cover basic business and economic stories. The workshop meant to give basic knowledge on these topics to help journalists report and write insightful stories. Speakers included international reporter Anya Schiffrin, European Union economist Reinhilde Veugelers, and former New York Times Prague stringer Peter Green.

New York City, USA (March 30-April 2, 2006)

Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz again led a four-day seminar for journalists on "Covering Globalization" organized by the Initiative for Policy Dialogue with Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. This seminar help strengthen the economic literacy of working journalists and better equip them to produce knowledgeable and accurate work about global economic issues in a fast-changing world. Speakers included Jeffrey Sachs and Glenn Hubbard from Columbia University as well as the economist William Easterly, former New York Times trade reporter Elizabeth Becker and Fortune's International Editor, Robert Friedman.

Ulan Bator, Mongolia (July, 2005)

On July 5, 6, and 7 we held a three-day seminar for Mongolian journalists to discuss key development issues that Mongolia faces, the experiences of other countries, and map out strategies for future coverage. Particular emphasis was placed on the use of foreign aid and the role of mining in economic development.

Speakers included Columbia University's Jenik Radon, Anya Schiffrin and Joseph Stiglitz as well as Graham Watts from the Financial Times and development economist Isabel Ortiz.

Jakarta, Indonesia (December, 2004)

On December 13 and 14, 2004, we held a two-day workshop on “Covering Labor.” The aim of the workshop was to strengthen reporter’s understanding of issues such as international and local labor standards, trade unions, corporate governance, activism, labor disputes and legal frameworks. The workshop was co-organized by the Pantau Foundation in Jakarta. Speakers included Anya Schiffrin, Columbia professor and journalist; Mila Rosenthal, Columbia professor, Dita Sari, labor activist; Kevin Cassidy, ILO; and Carmen Noriel, ILO.

Almaty, Kazakhstan (November, 2003)

On November 16, 17 and 18 there was a three-day workshop on “Covering Resource Wealth”. The aim of the workshop was to help reporters strengthen their understanding of the effect that oil wealth has on development and the importance of corporate governance. The workshop was co-organized by the Kazkahstan Press Club. Speakers included Joseph E. Stiglitz, Columbia University adjunct professor Jenik Radon and Wall Street Journal reporter Steve LeVine. About 35 reporters attended the event.

Baku, Azerbaijan (November, 2003)

On November 19, 20 and 21 there was a three-day workshop on “Covering Resource Wealth”. The aim of the workshop was to help reporters strengthen their understanding of the effect that oil wealth has on development and the importance of corporate governance. The workshop was co-organized by the Public Finance Monitoring Center in Baku. Speakers included Inglab Ahmedov, Joseph E. Stiglitz, Columbia University adjunct professor Jenik Radon and freelance journalist Andrew Finkel. About 15 reporters attended the event.

New York City, USA (March 2003)

“Covering Globalization” was a four-day workshop held at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Sessions included bailouts, labor and trade. To see the program click here.

In March 2002, we gave a presentation in Hanoi on interviewing techniques which was attended by a dozen reporters and editors, mostly from the Vietnam News. We did a second presentation on “Enron and the US Media” which was attended by students and instructors from the economics department of Hanoi National University.

In August in Moldova we did a half-day workshop on privatization and covering sovereign debt crises. The speakers included IPD director Shari Spiegel, World Bank economist David Ellerman and privatization expert Gerard Roland who teaches at University of California at Berkeley. About 25 local reporters attended from both print and television.

In Spring 2001, we brought together a dozen reporters from Argentina, Ethiopia, Serbia, the Philippines, Trinidad and Vietnam for three days in Washington DC Topics covered included banking crises, privatizations and the role of the World Bank and IMF.
